Description
Kore! Meaning κόρη, “maiden” is a sculpture of female figure found in the Archaic period, always of a young age. Kouroi, are the youthful male equivalent of kore statues. Always reserved, with an archaic smile, Korai never show emotion. And unlike the naked kouroi, korai are shown wearing either thick, heavy peplos or lighter garments such as the chiton.
There are several theories as to whether the korai represent mortals or deities. What is known is that Korai were also used as offerings to the gods or the dead.
